Password Hygiene: Best Practices for a Safer Online Life

 

Almost everything we do online requires an account—and every account needs a password. From your personal Facebook to your work email to shopping apps, you probably log in and out of something multiple times a day.

Managing strong passwords might feel like a chore, but it’s essential. Think of it like brushing your teeth—tedious if ignored, painful if skipped. If you’ve ever been locked out of an account or worse, had your information stolen, you’ll know exactly how costly weak password habits can be.

Hackers are no longer shady figures typing furiously in dark basements. They're bots and scripts constantly scanning for easy prey—accounts with weak, predictable, or reused passwords. To avoid becoming a digital victim, here’s how to step up your password hygiene, stay safer online, and keep the “stalking panthers” of the web at bay.

🔒 Tip 1: Use Very Strong Passwords

It’s tempting to go with something easy like Danny@2002 or mybirthday123—but these are exactly the types of passwords hackers try first. Many people still use weak passwords like “123456” or “password1,” and unfortunately, those get cracked in seconds.

Don’t use:

  • Names or birthdates (yours, your kids', your dog’s)
  • Sequential numbers or alphabets like abc123 or 987654
  • Information someone could easily guess from your social media

Instead of a word, use a full phrase. It could be a short sentence or a favorite line from a book or movie. For example:

These are long enough to be strong and unique enough to be hard to guess—especially if they aren’t phrases you’ve shared publicly.

Get playful. Replace letters with numbers or symbols, and use a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters. This can dramatically increase password strength. Try:

  • xP3r!3nc3>Th30ry (care to guess what it means?)

The longer your password, the better. A 6-character password might take minutes to crack. A 14-character passphrase with mixed characters? That could take centuries (literally).

Recommendation: Use at least 12 characters. 16+ is even better.

Some reliable options include Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane. Most even work across your phone and computer, making it seamless.

📧 Tip 8: Don’t Log In Through Email Links

Hackers often send fake emails pretending to be your bank, Netflix, or PayPal asking you to “log in to fix an issue.” Don’t fall for it.

Instead: Open your browser, type the website manually, and log in from there. Email links are a big phishing risk.

🚫 Tip 9: Avoid Obvious Patterns

Don't use patterns like abcde, 1234, or qwerty. Even if you think you’re being clever by reversing them—hackers are smarter than that.

MFA is like adding a deadbolt after locking your door. Even if someone guesses your password, they still need another code (like one sent to your phone) to access your account.
