With so many digital apps and websites requiring you to sign in, managing passwords has become a challenge. More importantly, with the increase in data breaches and cyber attacks, password security has never been more critical. Many people struggle with weak passwords or reuse the same one across multiple platforms, creating vulnerabilities. 

By offering an easy and secure way to manage log-ins, password managers keep things simple and confidential. One such popular tool is the Google Password Manager. But the big question is: should you use it? In this post, we’ll explore how Google Password Manager works, its benefits, its drawbacks, and tips for using it securely.



What Is a Password Manager?

A password manager is a tool that securely stores your passwords for different accounts and can automatically fill them when needed. Instead of remembering multiple passwords, you only need to remember one—your password manager’s master password. These tools generate strong passwords, store them safely, and ensure you do not reuse weak or compromised passwords.

Password managers save time by autofilling your login details across websites and apps. Most also come with features to alert you if any of your saved passwords have been compromised in a breach. Overall, they simplify password management and strengthen security by promoting unique, strong passwords for every account.



Google Password Manager and How It Works

Google Password Manager is integrated directly into the Google ecosystem, particularly in Chrome and Android devices. It stores your passwords in your Google account and syncs them across your devices.

  • Saving Passwords: When you log in to a website or app using Chrome or an Android device, Google offers to save your password in your Google Account.
  • The Google Password Manager can suggest strong, unique passwords for you so you don't run the risk of reusing the same password for multiple accounts. 
  • Autofill Passwords: The saved password is linked to the app or website so that when you revisit that site or app, Google Password Manager will automatically suggest the saved password, allowing you to log in with a single click or tap. You don't need to remember the password, just tap "Sign in"

Benefits of Google Password Manager  


Here are some reasons you may like to use Google Password Manager:


  1. It is very convenient to use. Since it's built directly into Chrome and Android, Google Password Manager is easy to use. You can start using it right away if you already have a Google account.
  2. There is no need to install anything. Just sign in to your Google Account and you are good to go. 
  3. It is free to use. No upfront fee, no hidden charges. It is free for all. 
  4. Google Password Manager syncs your passwords across all devices where you are signed into Google. This makes it seamless to switch between devices without needing to manually enter passwords.
  5. Google Password Manager can generate complex and strong passwords for new accounts, which is critical for security. It makes it hard for any other person to guess your password.
  6. It checks if your passwords are compromised, weak, or reused and prompts you to take action to improve security.
  7. Since Google encrypts your passwords, they are stored securely, and only you can access them.
  8. Google also supports two-factor authentication (2FA), adding an extra layer of protection to your account.

Disadvantages and Drawbacks to Using Google Password Manager


While it is a great tool, it has its own drawbacks. 


  1. It is limited to Google Ecosystem.  Google Password Manager works primarily with Chrome and Android. If you switch to another browser or use a device outside the Google ecosystem, your passwords won’t sync, and you'll lose some functionality. You must be signed into your Google account on your Android device or on the Chrome browser. 
  2. Google filters out apps and websites that it deems unsafe. This means that you would not be able to use Google Password Manager on some apps or websites. 
  3. Unlike some other password managers, Google Password Manager does not have a standalone app for desktops. You have to rely on Chrome’s settings or the manager's website site to manage your passwords.
  4. Google Password Manager lacks some advanced features found in dedicated password managers, like secure notes, multi-user sharing, or storing other sensitive information (e.g., credit cards or personal IDs).
  5. Reliance on one account is risky.  If someone gains access to your Google account, they could potentially access all of your passwords saved in it. 
  6. If you are already signed in to your Google Account on your device or on Chrome, then anyone who has access to your device would also be able to login to any of your accounts. All they need to do is tap "Sign in" and the door is thrown open. 
  7. The 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) is limited. The common second step verification for most people is to get an SMS code or a phone call. If someone else has access to your device with your SIM in it, they can easily provide the necessary codes.
  8. Your passwords are just one click away. Anyone can just go to your Chrome browser settings and view your list of passwords there. 


Tips for Using Google Password Manager Securely


If you decide to use Google Password Manager, here are some tips to ensure maximum security:


  1. Use a Strong Google Account Password. Your Google account is the key to all your stored passwords. Ensure you use a strong, unique password for it, and avoid reusing passwords from other accounts.
  2. Do not reuse the same password for more than one account. While Google can suggest strong passwords to use, it would not force it on you. You are still responsible for ensuring that each password you use is strong and secure. 
  3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). While it can be breached, adding 2FA to your Google account makes it much harder for hackers to access your account, even if they know your password. It gives you another layer of security.
  4. Review Your Passwords Regularly. Use the Password Checkup feature to ensure your passwords are strong and not compromised in any breaches. Change any weak or reused passwords immediately.
  5. Monitor your Google account regularly for any unauthorized third party sign in. 
  6. Avoid Sharing Your Google Account. Never share your Google account credentials with anyone. If you must share access to specific accounts, consider using a dedicated password manager that allows secure sharing of individual passwords.
  7. Keep Your Devices Secure: Since your Google Password Manager relies on syncing across devices, make sure to keep your devices secure with a strong passcode or biometric lock.
  8. Be wary of who has access to your device.  It may not be convenient to sign out of your Google account everytime, so it is best not to give your phone and computer to just anyone.
  9. If you are using a public computer, ensure you sign out of your Google Account before leaving, so that the next user would not gain access to your login details. 


Conclusion

Google Password Manager is a convenient and free tool for anyone already integrated into the Google ecosystem. It simplifies password management and enhances security with strong password generation and the Password Checkup feature. However, it does have its limitations, such as being restricted to Chrome and Android, and concerns about privacy. If you are looking for an easy, built-in password manager and are comfortable with Google’s services, it can be a good option. However, for more advanced features or cross-platform support, you might want to explore dedicated password managers.
